Since the launch of image generators like Stable Diffusion and Midjourney, a new wave of AI-focused generative creators have taken to TikTok. These accounts post novelty art carouselsbut a subset of creators are playing on a curiosity, one that seems to ask, what if the Western imperial nations never came to power?
The TikTok account @what.if_ai, for example, already has more than 27,000 followers. Post videos with messages like “What would happen if Mexico invaded the US?” and “What if Somalia conquered Europe?”.
“My viewers come from all over the world. Some live in former colonies like Somalia, India and Ireland and often want to visualize a different story. One where it might not be the colonized but the colonizer,” said the creator behind @what.if_ai – a generative AI aficionado, with a full-time job in the tech sector, the creator declined to share his name and location, for fear that their nationality will bias the reactions of viewers.
The creator behind @what.if_ai claims that most of his ideas come from comments. After investigating a certain history, use ChatGPT to generate scripts and Midjourney to produce the images that accompany him Prior to these tools, the account may have required a team to produce videos, including researchers and screenwriters, as well as illustrators and video editors.
Most of the videos, for example, don’t really envision a future without colonial rule. Instead, exchange the roles of colonized and colonizer. Also, despite changing the history of colonization as we know it, many of these TikTok videos are less radical than they first appear.
