If there is a car that took all the flashes of the past Shanghai Motor Show 2023, that has been the new top-of-the-range electric Volkswagen. This is what will from now on be the model with the most complete and complex equipment and skills in the range and which will replace the already established SUV ID.4 as the flagship. In a world premiere with ties between Germany, China and the United States, the sleek and streamlined Volkswagen ID.7 sedan It’s one of the big releases this year.
The new Volkswagen ID.7 registers a length of 4956 mm, a width of 1862 mm and a height of 1537 mm. One of its keys is its 2965 mm wheelbase and its reduced overhangs, which affects the interior space. In design, it’s clear that this is a production descendant of the ID.Vizzion concept, especially when you look at its trim-laden aerodynamic profile and upper body.
On its front with pronounced wheel arches, the characteristic horizontal LED line that joins the optics at each end and that identifies the Volkswagen electric ones shines. At the height of the front axle begins the sliding sunroof that, with a coupé style, covers much of the length.
Here we stop, because it is a sunroof that stands out for its smart glass that can switch between opaque and transparent, a configuration that can be accessed both through tactile adjustments and through voice commands thanks to the IDA voice assistant.
Volkswagen ID.7: Interior equipment
The Volkswagen ID.7 is considered by the brand itself as a model aimed at the upper middle class and its equipment reflects this. In this regard, we have just mentioned something due to its virtuous glass ceiling. Its qualities make this Volkswagen a premium sedan and a kind of limousine suitable for long distance trips.
This new electric four-door offers the option of having Climatronic front seats, something unprecedented so far in Volkswagen, which include heating, cooling and even drying according to needs.
These seats will also be available with a massage function. The air conditioning of this vehicle is intelligent and is distributed in the passenger compartment, in fact, by means of intelligent air diffusers. It is automatically activated and configured from the moment it detects the proximity of the key and is modified according to the orders issued by voice control.
All this technological equipment goes further with the incorporation of an augmented reality front display screen and a 38-centimeter -15-inch central screen from which all these configurations and options related to infotainment can be viewed. The 700-watt Harman Kardon sound system includes 14 high-end speakers and a subwoofer in the trunk.
Power, charging time and autonomy
Developed on an evolved MEB platform, the ID.7 hits the market with the most powerful electric motor in the range: a total of 210 kW, equivalent to 286 horsepower. In addition, the great result of its engineering lies in its electric autonomy of up to 700 km, the highest in the range. All this from a charging capacity of up to 200 kW, which will carry from 10 to 80 percent of the total possible energy in 25 minutes.
This option will be the maximum and will be capable with the 85 kWh net battery, the largest of the brand to date. Below will be the cheapest alternative, a 77 kWh battery with a capacity of up to 170 kW in direct current that will make the car travel up to 610 km on a single charge.
For driving, the Volkswagen ID.7 launches prepared with certain levels of autonomous driving. Through Travel Assist, a function developed in conjunction with CARIAD, the Group’s software company, the car is able to take over lateral and longitudinal control, something characteristic of vehicles with Level 2 automation.
This system also assists the driver in changing lanes on motorways at speeds exceeding 90 km/h and when parking, with independent movements and even with the memory function at maximum distances of 50 metres, from which the car takes over and the human watches and supervises either sitting or from outside.
When will your production start?
With a price that still remains to be confirmed and that could reach 65,000 euros, all that remains is to wait, after the World Premiere in Berlin and at the Shanghai Motor Show, for its long-awaited launch onto the streets. Production will start in June 2023 at the Emden, Germany plant. From there will come the units for the European markets and the United States.
It is in the United States where, precisely, the ID.7 will be available from 2024. In Europe and China, where the copies for its customers will be manufactured, it will arrive this year.
