Objective: a new model that achieves greater benefits It intends to adapt to the new reality of film consumptionIn Spain, experiments have already been carried out with this new model
This Tuesday the European Commission has launched a pilot project financed with two million euros with the aim of examining what could be the possible benefits in terms of higher income from the simultaneous release the same day of independent films in theaters, television and the Internet.
This project will feature around twenty independent films from various European countries, including Spain, as announced by the Community Executive in a press release. In addition, the executive has given the example of the film industry in the United States, the most important today, and which is increasingly adapting to new distribution models. In the words of the Culture Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou: “It is essential that Europe also test all the possibilities to see how we can guarantee diversity and profitability in a competitive market”.
In the United States it is already very common carry out the premieres of TV series simultaneously with other countries like Mexico or Great Britain.
At the moment, most of the films released in Europe follow the traditional model, opening first in festivals and cinemas and then months later moving on to television or the Internet.
From Brussels it is highlighted that some independent film producers believe that it is possible to achieve higher income if the films are released on all possible distribution channels at the same time.
In Spain, this new model has already been experimented with, as happened with the premiere last July of the film carmine or burst by the famous actor and director Paco León, which premiered on Filmin, Google Play and iTunes as well as being released in theaters and on DVD. Another project that challenges the traditional model of film creation and distribution is the the cosmonauta feature film produced by Riot Cinema Collective that poses a new financing, production and distribution modeltaking advantage of all the available communication tools: Internet, social networks, communities and mobiles. It is currently one of the models of crowdfunding most successful in history.
