Sao Paulo, May 25 (EFE).- Sao Paulo Fashion Week, the main catwalk in Brazil, officially began this Thursday with shows that refer to African culture and “biodesign” techniques.
The Komplexo Tempo center hosted both fashion shows, the first with a collection that makes a “past-present-future” connection to African culture in a proposal by the brothers Junior and Céu Rocha, managers of the Meninos Rei (MR) brand.
The so-called “Afrofuturism” rescued the contribution of the black race in the history of the world from its ancestors with a parade that brought to the catwalk “plural and diverse” models who wore blouses, skirts, dresses and pants of light fabrics.
The brothers were born in a poor community in Salvador, the capital of Bahia, and from their own experience they presented the parade called “Pop Ancestral” aided by technology and futuristic nuances, such as 3D printing of ethnic prints and wildlife.
“Time flies” and currently “printing is 3D, the goal is verse, intelligence is artificial, the dog is cyber, reality is augmented and pop is ancestral,” Céu described in a play on words. Rocha, quoted in a statement.
With stage illustrations by artist Leonardo Barbosa and garnishes from other brands, the models paraded to music composed by DJ Telefunksoul.
The Martins brand already presented its first collection with pieces entirely made from biodesign, the design that uses nature and that this time was signed by Tom Martins himself, a designer well known on the catwalks for his irreverence and daring.
The “Blooming Collection” was created under the concept of “environmental responsibility” with twelve Martins creations, four of them with the collaboration of the Spanish “biodesigner” Paula Ulargui, who develops pieces in which natural plants grow on fabrics.
The Spanish woman had already been successful in Europe with her “works of art to wear” through the Loewe brand.
In addition to the natural process itself based on biodesign, the collection had a “botanical” theme inspiration from gardenia flowers and the reuse of water.
The show, which also paid tribute to the “great rebel of fashion”, the British Vivienne Westwood (1941-2022), included the participation of the singers Liniker and Majur.
The collection, with a variety of fabrics complemented by feathers, nylon and wool, was also reminiscent of big names in the “new wave” style, such as singers Boy George, Nina Haagen and Siouxsie Sioux.
The 55th edition of the Sao Paulo Fashion Week, which takes place until next Sunday in different spaces of the city under the name “Origens/Ressignificar”, pays homage to identity and to human beings as a creative collective.
The catwalk, which this year brings together about 40 Brazilian and foreign designers, officially kicked off this Thursday, but since last Monday there have been several previous shows that have served to warm up the engines. EFE
