During 2021, six out of ten companies in Colombia already had a digital transformation strategy, according to Andi. For Mauricio Caballero, software director at MercadoLibre, digital transformation must be one of the main axes of organizations, since the current market demands it. ¨For this reason, from the company, we develop processes that are characterized by digitization, innovation and the use of new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, seeking to constantly improve our productivity and services¨.
“Technology is the foundation with which we build and scale our products and solutions to transform the lives of millions of people in Latin America. We have a solid history of innovation and development in the marketplace and we are turning our capacity to the world of finance, logistics and storage”, says Caballero.
What stands out the most are the advances associated with Artificial Intelligence, “the cornerstone of the technological approach to offer a more efficient and satisfactory user experience”. Some examples are: the intelligent search system (Business Intelligence) that takes advantage of the use of machine learning algorithms to optimize user searches and results; and data analytics that offer personalized purchase recommendations for potential customers.
However, Mercado Libre’s flagship strategy in Artificial Intelligence is the development of Machine Learning or predictive data analysis. “We have a very robust team of people who work across different areas of the company with this approach. Part of them make up the Machine Learning Cross team that deals with both the tools and the research processes and deployment of high-impact solutions”, explains Caballero.
A challenging scenario
There are many challenges for companies seeking to effectively implement new technologies. For example, the education and training of employees, finding effective and profitable innovation strategies in countries like Colombia, guaranteeing security and implementing information protection measures for users, which in the case of Mercado Libre, is a fundamental pillar due to to the constant handling of data.
In this sense, Caballero highlights the importance of the Government being immersed in the processes that promote innovation in companies: “It is necessary to establish a modern and clear regulatory framework to encourage investment in technology and business innovation. It is also important to promote public policies that support education and training in digital skills, both for employers and workers.
In his view, closing digital gaps and strengthening connectivity in rural areas are other pending tasks in the democratization of digital markets. Caballero points out that the articulation between companies and the public sector is necessary in the development of solutions for the community in technological matters, as well as “to improve security and privacy online and protect the rights of citizens in the digital age” .
