In Spain there are more than 15 million areas covered with trees, but every year forest fires represent one of the greatest environmental dangers. In 2022, more than 300,000 hectares were burned by these fires.
To deal with this problem, security, In collaboration with vodafone and Dryadhave started a pilot test in the DuPont industrial complex in Asturias, with an IoT solution, which can become an important ally in the fight against fire.
“We are very pleased to be working with Securitas and Vodafone to bring our forest fire detection technology to Spain, a country that suffers greatly from these events. The success of this pilot demonstrates the effectiveness of our Silvanet solution”, explains Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO and Co-Founder of Dryad.
Forest fires, detect them with IoT
The pilot phase has ended with a drill in which a controlled burning of plant material from the forest was carried out, coordinated with the authorities and supervised by firefighters. The sensors of the IoT solution immediately detected the possible indication of fire and, through the remote monitoring platform, it was possible to accurately identify the exact location of the alleged focus.
Previously, since its installation several weeks ago, the sensors had learned to recognize, thanks to ML, the “smell” of the forest in which they are located. This process was crucial so that they can detect any indication of fire at a very early stage, avoiding false alarms.
Securitas deploys the first IoT solution for the early detection of forest fires in Spain in the DuPont plant in Asturias in collaboration with Vodafone and Dryad
The sensors, powered by solar panels, are installed in the trees themselves using techniques that respect the vegetation and work in a network, connecting with a link device that centralizes the signals. All collected data is processed using cloud-based analytics.
In the case of DuPont, the monitoring of these signals is carried out locally in the control center of the industrial plant. If an alarm is received, it is immediately sent to the emergency brigade present at the facility.
A new service for companies and AA.PP.
The success of the first pilot project has led Securitas Seguridad España to incorporate this innovative solution into its portfolio of services. Its IoT division will be in charge of the installation and maintenance of these devices, as well as their monitoring from the Securitas Operation Center (SOC), the largest security operations center for companies and institutions in Spain.
This will allow an immediate response to any indication of fire, alerting their own fire brigades in private clients or notifying the emergency centers of public authorities.
