Abbreviations FTP stands for File Transfer Protocolthat is to say, File Transfer Protocol. Therefore, an FTP server, such as Firezilla, is the program that helps to work with this system.
With that name you will understand a bit that we are talking about a protocol that allows us to transfer files directly from one device to another. It is true that in recent years it has fallen out of use a lot, but it still has its uses.
He FTP was born in 1971having a lot of importance, not in vain was one of the basic components of ARPANETthe network from which what we know today as the Internet was derived.
Being a protocol for sharing files between computers that are connected to the Internet without intermediaries, it is deeply linked to computers that work with a network TCP (Transmission Control Protocol).
Today we are going to focus on possibly the most famous FTP client of all those used today. That is why we are going to know better what and how FireZilla works.
How to configure Firezilla to access an FTP server:
What is Filezilla?
As we have already indicated, Firezilla is a FTP clientone of the most popular today, which was released in the year 2001 and since then it has grown to be among the best we can use, with constant updates, very good security and a friendly interface.
Firezilla’s function is to connect to an FTP server so that from there we can manage the files we want in the way we see what we need.
As is normal, to be able to enter that server, we have to put the pertinent data on it, such as the server address, username and passwordso that Firezilla can enter inside and thus we have our FTP at full capacity.
From FileZilla we will be able to upload, download, rename, copy, paste, move or delete the files that we deem necessary from the FTP that we use, just as we do with exploring files on a Windows 11 computer, for example.
Install Filezilla
In order to install Firezilla, we must go to the official website of the client. We will see that the opportunity to download it is offered for both Windows, Mac and Linux.
We are going to download it windows and start the installer:
- Once the installation process begins, we must click on I agree in the first window.
- After that it will try to install some other additional software such as Avast Secure to which we should first click on decline and then in Next. If we are interested in installing it, we will press Accept.
- Then we click on Anyone who uses this computerif you want Firezilla to work for all users, if you only want it to work for you, you should check Only for me.
- Next we choose what we want to install (although it is advisable to leave it as it is).
- Now we put the folder where we want it to be installed the program, which only requires about 43 MB to install, and click on Next.
- Click on Next again and it will be installed on the computer.
Configure FireZilla
Now that we have the software installed on the computer, it’s time to start configuring it to start working.
As we have already told you before, it must be connected to an FTP server so that it can work as it should.
Let’s see what steps we must follow:
- Let’s click on it site manager which is the first button on the top left of the program.
- As it is empty since it is the first time that we enter, what we have to do is give the pertinent data and for that we are going to press where it says new site (bottom left).
- Now we must introduce several essential data: server address (Server)the kind of connection (Access mode)he user (User) and the password (Password).
- We can put the data for the hosting of our website or for an FTP that we know and even that of a website.

- Once we have entered all the data, it asks us if we want save password, something that we recommend for the convenience of not having to put it back on. We can also Do not save password either Save passwords protected by a master password.
- If all the data is well covered, you will see as in the part above, that the connection has been established.

How to work with Firezilla
Uploading files with Firezilla is extremely intuitive, since we can see how there are two columns in the central part of the program. Well then, let’s use them.
The one on the left are the local files of our computer and the one on the right are those files that are remotethe ones that the FTP server has.
With this clear, we will have two methods to upload files to our FTP server:
- dragging the file specifically from the local column to the one of the FTP server.
- by double clicking with the mouse on the file that we want, it will be transferred to FTP automatically.
- We can also click on the file or folder that we want with the right mouse button and click on Increasewhich will make it go directly to the place marked in the FTP.
If what we want is to download information that is in the FTP so that we have it on our computer, as you will surely have deduced, we are going to carry out the same actions, but in reverse.
That is, drag the FTP to the PC, double-click on the server so that it goes to the folder that we have marked in the local storage of the computer or mark with the right mouse button the file/folder of the FTP and click on Discharge so that it is saved in the folder where we have marked in the local section.

For other types of actions such as delete, copy, move, rename files, create a directory, file permission, etc. it is done in the same way that we usually do it in the Windows file explorer, but inside Firezilla.
Now you know not only what Firezilla is, but also everything that this famous FTP client can offer.
