Artificial Intelligence systems have already reached the streets: they are capable of monitoring us, identifying us in public spaces, “predicting” our emotions and the probability that we will commit acts of crime. They are also used to redirect police and immigration control to areas that are already over-policed. Unfortunately, this facilitates human rights violations, such as the right to request asylum and the presumption of innocence, and encourages discrimination.
It is urgent that Artificial Intelligence systems have adequate regulation. If not, we run the risk that the misuse of this technology will increase inequality and discrimination, that the authorities will make decisions without responsibility, and that the big technology companies will have all the power over Artificial Intelligence.
The European Parliament has presented a bill on Artificial Intelligence. This Law must ensure that the development and use of Artificial Intelligence is responsible, transparent and respects human rights.
