Simonetta Chelli, ESA Director of Earth Observation Programs, spoke about the importance of the Meteosat Third Generation Imager and the quality of the image.
“It is an example of what European cooperation in space can achieve,” said Cheli. “The level of detail revealed by the MTG-1 image, unattainable so far in Europe and Africa from a geostationary orbit, It will give us a greater understanding of our planet and the weather systems that shape it.”
For Cheli, the photo of the Earth “represents not only what can be achieved through the European experience, but also our determination to ensure that communities in Europe and beyond feel the benefits of new technologies”.

The Meteosat Third Generation Imager produces photographs with higher resolution and more frequently than second generation satellites. They allow weather forecasts to be more precise, detailing the evolution of the weather in the area.
