Today we are going to talk about the quintessential internet rivalry. No, we are not referring to the fight between Amazon and AliExpress, nor to the crusade between Instagram and TikTok, but to something much older. A competition present in the popular imagination and that has served as the basis and inspiration for films, expressions and even cartoons: dogs vs cats.
Indeed, if you have ever wondered which of these animals reign on the web (and if not, you will know anyway), we bring you the answer. Thanks to the global version of the Digital 2023a study carried out by We Are Social and Meltwater, we have been able to discover who stars in the most content on the Internet. Let’s go with it!
Cats succeed on Wikipedia
It seems that both dog lovers and cat fans have been working hard to add new contributions about cats to the vast ocean of knowledge that is the Internet. In 2022, some 6.080 million web pages with content about dogs (in 2021 there were 2,400 million) and 5.630 million websites whose protagonists are cats (in 2021 there were 2,830 million). This huge increase in both types of content has put dogs in the lead.
Likewise, taking into account the Google search volume corresponding to the terms “dog” or “cat” in 2022, the dogs win again, with 89, compared to 48 for the cats.
However, the picture changes radically if we look at the data relating to the number of visits of entries in Wikipedia of both animals. While the entrance of the dogs has a not inconsiderable number of 2.86 million visitsThe one of the cats far exceeds it, accumulating in 2022 9.13 million of visits.
Dogs are all the rage on social media
The study has analyzed the situation of dogs and cats in three social networks: Instagram, TikTok and Twitter. in all of them dogs have been proclaimed as the great winners, showing a more notable presence. In fact, the biggest celebrity in the Instagram petfluencer arena is jiffpoma cute Pomeranian with 9.4 million followers.
In 2022, 354.3 million publications were recorded in instagram tagged with the hashtag “#dog”, 81.5 million more than those with the hashtag “#cat”. For his part, for TikTok the number of views accumulated by tiktoks with the same hashtags has been taken into account. In this case, the figures obtained are very similar to those of Instagram, the publications tagged with “#dog” have been viewed 348.5 million times and those containing the hashtag “#cat” 270.3 million.
Finally, it is in Twitter where we appreciate a more pronounced difference in figures. According to the data provided by the platform, in the little bird’s social network there are many more users interested in dogs (386.5 million) than in cats (62.2 million).
compilation
If something is clear to us after knowing these data, it is that, both the fans of the dogs and the michis can be more than happy for having so much content about their favorite animals. And, of course, we couldn’t finish this article without honoring these furry friends with a small compilation of social media posts in which they are protagonists.
